Round 5 - Saturday, 2nd October 2004

Crusaders v. Mainlanders at Mission Road
Result: Crusaders won b y 67 runs

With a predictably comfortable result against the Saracens three days before, the mighty Crusaders were next up against perennial bogey team, the Mainlanders. "These guys bloody beat us every time!" bemoaned Toddy, as he prophetically points out to all and sundry each year in this fixture.

The Captain had no hesitation in having a bat upon winning the toss for the record tenth time in a row.

Damo and Barnacle opened up and faced a fiery spell of swing bowling. It turned out to be a little too hot as both were soon back in the pavilion, registering their first sub 50 opening partnership for the Crusaders.

Chic and Toddy put on a solid stand until Todd was bowled neck and crop, in the process ruining his 50 plus batting average!  After the enigmatic Rob Wilkins was adjudged out LBW, Matty "circle work" Arnold strode to the crease and affected ten runs (five off the body), boldly signaling his intentions with a swipe through mid-wicket off the second ball. Alas it was short lived and he was out to a great catch, the Crusaders were 6/60.

With Chic holding the innings together, the Captain made his way to the crease needing to stay around and help save his team. This former left arm spinner whom terrorised the Colony's finest batsman in his prime, was not just going to stick around though. With Chic bringing his 50 up in style, this was the sign for the captain to step up to the plate.

Like Lennie Pascoe in full flight, David Arthur was indeed "violence in motion" as he struck with both beauty and  savagery to every angle of the ground, punctuated with a towering back  foot six over square leg!

Thanks to a great partnership, Chic and Captain helped the Crusaders to a total of 120. With the Mainlanders 1/40 after 10 it was time for proven match winner, the "Johnson Train" to get rolling. Toddy after bowling very well without luck suddenly roared into life putting on a bowling clinic and grabbing a clutch of wickets in the process. Two balls, two wickets, third one outside off stump no hat trick. Same again two balls two wickets, but this time a perfectly pitched ball cutting towards middle and wrapping the pad, everybody up, but the umpire correctly called not out. Not bad for a twelve year old! Close but no cigar, Toddy settled on a five for instead. Chic grabbed three wickets to complete a match winning effort, with Anush and Yassir (a couple of very talented youngsters whom filled in) wrapping up the tail.

Two from two and with Beefy, Mojo, Travis, Everybody Loves Raymond, and The Lamb Sandwich still to return, the Crusaders would seem to have to have plenty more meat left on their stick.

At Mission Road: Crusaders 129-9 (A Correa 54, D Arthur 33; Atiq 9-4-11-4) beat Mainlanders 62 (Qasim 32; T Johnsen 10-2-30-5) by 67 runs

Round 4

Templars v. Infidels

Round 2

Templars v. Scorpions

Infidels v. Optimists

Round 4 - 17th October 2004

Templars v. Infidels at Mission Road
Result: Infidels won by 151 runs

In one of the most eagerly anticipated fixtures of the year the Templars lined up against the Infidels at Mission Road.

The defending champs have had a slow start to the season, with two loses. The Infidels, after dropping the first match, won their second and were now looking to make it two in a row.

Killer opened up with Mojo after winning the toss. Both having scored centuries in their previous matches looked confident and weathered a solid bowling performance from Mushy and Gohar. After the drinks break, Mojo then decided it was time to turn up the heat. Those who focus merely on the elegance and beauty of Mojo’s stroke play do so at their own peril. Using his feet to perfection, he bludgeoned three big sixes off Devang, immediately bumping up the scoring rate in the process. One over surprisingly he blocked out in immaculate fashion, then refreshed off he went again. It wasn’t until caught on the boundary by a spectacular diving catch from Azzam that Mojo finally departed for a fine 86, much to the relief of the opposition!

After Temo was adjudged LBW shortly afterwards, Killer then started to pick up the tempo using the depth of the crease, the pull shot was his best friend. After felling Anoop with a middled straight drive, the bowler finally had his revenge when Killer was out caught after a wild attempted sweep for a valuable 56.

Courtney, who went about dispatching the attack with youthful vigor, then joined Barney in putting on 70 for the fourth wicket. Ravi was singled out for a rare dose of punishment, with both batsmen smacking him over the boundary for a succession of sixes. Courtney was out third last ball for a classy 30, while Barney remained unbeaten on 49. The Templars were left chasing 237 for victory.

Jards opening up with Naresh Golani was not only keen to make amends after his golden duck against the British Army the weekend before, but also to lead from the front foot. Naresh, swinging like a barn door helped the Templars to bright start as they raced past 20 in the first two overs.  Up against the leagues in form bowler in Afzaal, Jards like the steady stream of sorry batmen preceding him was soon bought undone and was back in the Pavilion for 1.

Golani’s innings was also bought to a shuddering halt, with an Imran special as he skied one and was caught. From here on both bowlers struck at regular intervals, as no other batsman was able to make it into double figures. The Templars were all out for 75. It was really was a bowling clinic, which is sure to put the Hong Kong national selectors on notice!

At Mission Road: Infidels 236-4 (D Kelleher 57, M Cheruparambil 86, A Barnet 49*, C Kruger 30; Anoop 7-1-34-3) beat Templars 75 (A Haider 9-0-25-6, I Farcy 8-0-37-4) by 151 runs
