End of Season Report

The Colts ended a disappointing season without a win and only 12 games played in a 16 game season.

In a season which can only be described as disruptive and frustrating, the Colts played their 12 games over a 5 and a half month period i.e. only approximately 2 games a month. This disjointed schedule meant that there was no opportunity for our team to maintain any consistency or gain any of the momentum which is necessary to sustain a successful team through a long season. It was no coincidence that the champion team was the Scorpions who played all 16 games and managed to remain consistent throughout the season.

The lacklustre season was reflected also in the player attendances. No player played in all of the games with Yorgesh Mathani (11 games ) and Dinesh Uyangoda (10 games) coming the closest. In addition we used over 30 players through the year which is in part a reflection of the interruptions due to exams which we have every year, but is also a reflection of the poor fixture we were presented with. In addition several of the regular Colts departed in the 2001 summer and we were not able to replace them properly - including Dyutish Chauduri. Rohan Bighani, Zubair Nizami and Tony Lethbridge. Work also interrupted key experienced players such as skip Correa who was only able to play 4 games, VC Maurice Ling (7 games), keeper Arshard Amdani (2 games) and Louis Chan (4 games).

However there were some positives which we can point to:-

  • Yorgi continued his improvement taking 14 wickets at an average of 29, and scoring his first half century against the shell shocked Infidels.
  • Iftikhar had a consistent season with the bat averaging 27.5 and toiling well with the ball.
  • the debut of the enthusiastic Terry Kwan who will be an excellent long term addition on the squad once he returns from his university studies.
  • the rapid development of Shkawat Ali who became stronger and more consistent this season.
  • the return of Dinesh Uyangoda who will is still wayward with his line, but lethal with his pace.
  • the leadership of Kieran Kumaria who continues to show promise as a genuine all rounder.

We can also look forward to the return of several key players next season including Zaran Vaccha (year 13), Michael Wong, Grayson Tyndale, and Sean Brierley who will be completing their overseas studies soon and will likely return to Hong Kong permanently or at least for an extended period of time.

I would like to thank all of the Colts for their efforts this year and in particular VC Maurice who remains the key organiser and without who's help the team would not be fielded on a week to week basis. We look forward to a better and more regular season in 2002/03!

- Anthony Correa
