The Players The 2000-01 Saracens are/were:
End of Season Report This was a season that never really lived up to the highs of the previous year. Only a paltry $10000 dollars in the fines kitty was the worst performance for several years. The sad fact was that the Finesmaster missed far too many games and this coupled with the many wash outs has led to the upcoming Macau extravaganza dinner having to be held at the Taipa MacDonalds. With a limit on only two Big Macs for Shiroy and Medium frys. Mr. Grumpy scored the first of many centuries against Centaurs. Then some small revenge against Nomads but not enough to make up for the disappointment of the previous year. New boys Steve, Rob and Anil settling in well. The latter two picking up injuries almost straight away by practicing in the nets. This shows how new to Saracens that they were. This has changed as the season progressed and they know better than to practice. Zarin Vachha also coming in for his first full season and having a pretty successful one. Unfortunately the latter part of the season saw his Saturdays taken up with school activities. A first for a Vachha! HKU were dispatched for resits but then we tripped up against the might of CCC. The first derby against Crusaders saw an ill-tempered game, which did neither team any credit. PC and the Finesmaster watching from the swimming pool were not impressed. Then two wash outs against Kai Tak and Witherers followed by a big wins against Islanders and Lamma. A depleted side bowled well against Tartars but the batting wilted badly. No Rahul and no Ravi and we certainly missed Rahuls runs. This was follwed by a 1 wicket defeat aginst St. Georges that was a classic Saracens clutching defeat out of the jaws of victory performance. A zillion catches dropped off Zarin who took the new ball while his father doing a double somersault with pike took a great diving catch which broke his shoulder. Farewell Yarman for the rest of the season. A strong finish with wins over Gap Ramblers, DBS and the Police. But a seventh place an anticlimax after last year. Then the cup. A classic against HKU with the two Robs scaling the batting heights and an abject performance against Mainlanders to see us exit from the competition. This also saw an absolutely disgraceful exhibition of temper with stomping and jumping up and down on the pitch by the Finesmaster. Unfortunately no official umpires so he was not banned for a zillion games which would have been a fair result. The new boys fitted in well and we can hope that now that they have stopped practicing they will do better next year. Rahul scored many hundreds. This is a two edged sword because the team always depends on him pullin the game out of the fire and consequently the rest of the batting frequently spluttered without catching light. The Cat always willing to play and do his best. Two great catches by him against Police. The skipper has had his first season and has now had the unique experience of skippering the Saracens. He is up for another season, which is, like second marriage, a triumph of hope over experience. One stat that he needs to take on board is that in the recent over 45s game against HKCC 8 out of the 11 were Saracens, 6 of whom have played quite regularly this year. Young blood transfusions needed desperately or Saracens become a different sort of side. I guess we will discuss this in Macau. At the regular senior Saracens retirement lunches all we ever do is agree on having another lunch. Playing cricket all round Hong Kong highlights the great privilege we have playing at the KCC. Our thanks as always to the groundstaff, the F and B, who always know which red wine to bring after the game and to Marian and Ah Kwong. And so to end one must finish on a positive note and pick up a highlight of the season. There could only be one contender and that is the final over in the cup game against HKU. Nineteen to win and Robbie Gill at the crease. Dot ball, dot ball, 6, 6, 6, 4. Game won.
