v. St George's at KCC Returning from various parts of the world with varying degrees of increased proportions brought about by the excesses of the festive season the Knights of the Red Cross endeavored to pursue the still mathematical chance of winning the Holy Grail. The 'Boys of the Round Circle' took on their name sakes of St. Georges, but were not in the mood to be chivalrous, and indeed the fire eating red dragon of the KCC was to be used throughout the day. Losing, or not winning, a toss has become an occupational hazard for Captain O, and therefore it was with little surprise that the opposition skipper won and decided to bat. Taking the field with 9 players is not the best of situations to claim a victory, however Mohanna did turn up quickly, racing from work as he does on all Saturdays, however Don "Motors" Mohammed broke the long standing KCC All Comers Record for being late when arriving at 14:45 after experiencing a locked third gear on the Tuen Mun Highway. Hyphen (who was doing a tremendous job of umpiring) informed Captain O that Don would be unable to bowl until 16:15 which on his arrival due to the number of conferences held by the batsman, would have been on the cards. The dynamic pair of Beefy and Imy opened up proceedings and proceeded to give away boundaries due in part to some loose bowling, but mainly because of jammy batting with edges going over the Veterans and Scannosauraus head. Eventually Beefy broke through, and with the introduction of Hansie (Mohanna) the entire complexion of the game changed. Hansie has recovered from his severe groin strange, but was declaring back problems. He bowled a brilliant and patience spell of straight and swing bowling. He should have had seven wickets, but claimed only six due in part to a cheating Arab of a carpet salesman who also did not give an obvious runout due in part to being some way towards the sightscreen. Last year we had problems (and so I believe did other clubs) with St. Georges umpiring and more lively opposition may have had this chap rolled up in one of his own wares and sent back from wench he came (Mr Angry Green would certainly had said something). Apart from their Captain who was dropped by Toad (a sitter, in front of his mates) on 30, their batting can be described as 'lacking'. Gareth bowled some good balls and got their only bat out (but also bowled some John Toshacks), and the Toadmeter now stands at 18 after he cleared the tail up. By the way the Veteran got to extremely quick stumpings for a man of any age. With Angry Green being away Captain O and the Travalator shared the opening duties. Trav played some of his characteristic shots over mid-on until, with the score on 44, a ball just quick enough to hit the stumps, hit the stumps and the Kiwi trudged back to the hutch helmet and head lowered in disgust and disbelief. In strode the carnivorous Scannosaurus hunger as ever. What followed can only be described (by me the Captain) as carnage and being robbed. Both Captain O and the dinosaur man were seeing the bowl like a Tyrannosaurus Rex goolies, and various bowls were hit to all parts of the ground. Of the 155 run partnership in 17 overs no fewer than 100 came in boundaries, with the bowling changes more often than traffic lights. Unfortunately the Scannosaurus lost the plot, ie., nicked the strike and hit to many boundaries so that the Captain (seeking his first hundred in Hong Kong) required a six to get his hundred with 4 runs to win and proceeded to whole out at deep square leg. One can only imagine the thoughts of Captain O, who rest assured will find some appropriate way to punish his Australian friend. Thanks again for Jenny for scoring (must have been a nightmare with all those bowling changes) and for Hyphen for umpiring, especially for surviving the unfortunate gentlemen who nearly knocked him out with his body odour. At KCC: Crusaders 203-2 (G Jardine 94, S Scanlon 81*) beat St George's 202 (A Samarasekara 77; M Marzook 6-38) by 8 wkts [Top] Round 20 - 6th January 2001 Tartars

v. Optimists at HKCC The Colts rapid improvement continued unabated this Sunday as they ventured to the HKCC. The return of senior Colts, Grayson Tyndale and Sean Brierley to the side helped matters no end and the two opened the batting in fine style until Sean was trapped plum Lbw to an Ashman inswinger after taking the shine off the new ball. Skip Correa joined the in form Grayson and the settled in nicely putting on a century partnership in quick time. With the score approaching 150 and Grayson roaring towards a century he was out trying pull one with his score on 83. Skip Correa was out shortly afterwards for 43 and unfortunately the batting fell away for the Colts to be all out or 224 in the 48th over when we really should have had an extra 50 runs after the excellent start. VC Ling, Nazam, Zubi and Ifti will all be disappointed with the manner of their dismissals and must be more careful with preserving their wickets and batting for the full 50 overs. We went into the field feeling that we had a competitive score, but this confidence was tested early by an in form Stewart Brew who was hitting the ball very hard and clearly seeing the ball very early. 36 off Kierans first 2 overs saw a change of bowling and Grayson was able to slow the scoring somewhat. Hassnan continued his good form with the ball as well, but it was left to Zaran to make the breakthrough with his off spin when Brewie mistimed one and hit it onto his stumps ! (quite unlucky really for the HK captain!). With the score already on 90 after 12 overs it was always going to be difficult and Andy Roxbourgh and Nuttal both capitalised on the situation to steer the Optimists home in good time. Some positives this week and it was good to see us again scoring over 200. At HKCC: Optimists 225-4 (S Brew 49, A Roxburgh 65, J Collard 31, R Nuttall 49*) beat KCC Colts 224 (G Tyndale 83, A Correa 43, M Costain 4-66) by 6 wkts [Top] Infidels
v. Vagabonds at Mission Road WOULD LIKE TO WISH ALL A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR!! WITH ALL THE FESTIVITIES OVER WE WERE LOOKING FORWARD TO RESUMING OUR LEAGUE FIXTURE, ESPECIALLY AFTER THE THRASHING WE RECEIVE BY SCORPIONS WHICH WE DO NOT WANT TO TALK ABOUT). HAVING LOST THE TOSS WE FEARED THE WORST OF HAVING TO FIELD BUT SURPRISING WERE PUT INTO BAT. VAGS HAD A NEW FAST BOWLER IN THEIR RANKS AND WERE BANKING ON HIM TO GET THEM SOME EARLY BREAK THROUGHS. HE MANAGED TO HAVE MUDDY WATERS CAUGHT AT FIRST SLIP EARLY IN THE GAME. HOWEVER, DAMO WAS SOLID AS A ROCK AND WAS JOINED BY RAVI TO STEADY THE INNINGS. THEY PUT ON A GOOD PARTNERSHIP OF ABOUT 220 RUNS BEFORE DAMO WAS CAUGHT AT POINT (HE HAD TO RUSH BACK TO KCC FOR THE SPORTS DAY) . WITH WICKETS IN HAND, THE INCOMING PLAYERS SUCCESSFULLY PUSHED THE RUN RATE ALONG WITH JARDS AND CHRIS PROVIDING USEFUL CONTRIBUTIONS. RAVI FINISHED ON 146 RUNS, MUCH RELIEVED TO HAVE FINALLY GOT A SCORE. OUR INNINGS FINISHED AT 319 FOR 8 IN 50 OVERS. THE NEW BALL RESPONSIBILITIES WERE GIVEN TO CHRIS AND BEEFY AND THEY BOWLED EXTREMELY WELL CONCEDING ONLY 20 RUNS IN THE FIRST 10 OVERS. CHRIS HAD GOOD FIGURE OF 10 OVERS, 3 MAIDEN, 28 RUNS, 2 WICKETS . HE WAS WELL SUPPORTED BY IMMY, MUDDY WATERS AND TOBY WHITE ALL CHIPPING IN WITH 2 WICKETS EACH, WHILST MARK AND ROY GRAB A WICKET EACH. VAGS WERE EVENTUALLY BOWLED OUT FOR 191. NEXT GAME IS AGAINST THE COLTS AT THE CLUB ON THE 14TH JAN. THE REMAINING MATCHES WILL PROVE TOUGH COMPETITION AGAINST; LSW, TEMPLARS AND PAK ASSOC. At Mission Road: Infidels 319-8 (D Green 95, R Sujanani 146; V Niaz 4-38) beat Vagabonds 191 (Chris Coombes 40) by 128 runs [Top]
