End of Season Report

INFIDELS 2000-2001

The season began with high hopes for Infidels who had recruited Ravi as captain as well as Imran Farci and Mark Johnston. Our hopes proved real when we won the first 5 games including comfortable wins over Friends and Optimists and a close determined win against Scorpions.

November was always a key month with some big fixtures and some players away. This meant we would have to dig deep to stay in touch with the Pakistani Assoc. who were also unbeaten. This important month proved our undoing as we went wihtout a win losing to The Pakistanis and the return match against Friends.

After this a serious assaut on the League was going to be difficult. Another loss to The Scorps in December put us out of the running. Sandwiched between these losses was perhaps Infidels greatest win for many years. We managed to concede 334 to The Optimists which was due to some good batting some average bowling and the lack of an 11th body. Then followed a terrific controlled chase led by Mark Eames who batted through for 181. Surely a highlight of any season.

Other memorable moments included a very close game against eventual champions Pakistan. In this game we saw a sustained burst of pace bowling from Imran who took 6 prize scalps. Some individual efforts of note included the economical bowling of Earl Pereira. A 29 wicket season for Imran. Both Mark Eames and Damian Green figured prominently in the association batting aggregates. Green just failed to top 1000 runs and Eames made over 700. The fielding of Johnston, Brewster, Eames and Johnny -come- lately Timogen Hield ( who also promises much with the bat ). Both Chris williams and Adrian Baker toiled hard without making any great inroads. The feeling is that these 2 are not far from the mark and that a big season from one or both could be the catalyst for a real crack at the title. Nick Waters was very consistent when available.Toby White was a revelation with his attitude to batting (big...oh yes I say... big sixes) and fielding. If we can straighten up his bowling ( oh yes and convince him to join ) he would be awesome.

There is a strong sense of spirit amongst the Infidels squad which augurs well for next season. In his first seaon with a new group Ravi did a terrific job. Thanks to Jenny Lethbridge for keeping the scorebook in such pristine condition and giving up her time so generously.

- Damian
