Crusaders v. Centaurs at Mission Road
Result: Crusaders won by 24 runs

On arriving at Mission Road this skipper was astounded to see 11 Centaurs dressed in whites and warming up. Crusaders were 3 men and a dog. However it is here that one must cease to make any further comparisons between Centaurs and a cricket team. They did win the toss and proceeded to insert us and then dominate 80% of the game. The start and end of our innings was lamentable. To begin with Green and Pittman came and went with little distinction. Indeed the question may be asked whether Pittman's exit from the pitch was as undistinguished as the one he later made from the KCC. Thankfully Anurag, Ray and Todd hung around long enough to put up a score. Anurag's batting was particularly fluent. However with only 9 fielders it was thought that 138 may prove too few. At 60 for 1 this was looking like an early shower and a return to Cox's in disgrace. Anurag entered the fray and took a wicket with his first ball and more in each of his next few overs to take 5-31 to put us back in the game. Despite some tense moments we fielded well and luck had it that the catches went to those who could catch.

Having captained Wing Commander Lethbridge for the first full match I don't understand what all the fuss is about. This man was extraordinarily accommodating and even took the news of his removal from the bowling crease without anything resembling a girly huff.

Later in the KCC bar we celebrtaed our win and our season in style. Thanks to Toddy for teaching us those new games and getting us all plastered and then leaving. Very UNAUSTRALIAN.

At Mission Road: Crusaders 139 (A Bhatnagar 46, R Brewster 37; Cormack 3-34) beat Centaurs 115 (Cusak 42, Andrew 35; Bhatnagar 5-32, Green 4-17) by 24 runs

Round 16 - 19th February 2000

Crusaders v. Tartars at KCC
Result: Crusaders won by 32 runs

That thing called grass produced a good game at the club. Most Saturday players seem to be unsure of the surface, but I think all of us appreciated playing on the real stuff. Both sides had there fair share of unavailable members which resulted in the drafting of Fu Cannell and Tetley Evans from Sunday Infidels, a welcome addition to any side.

Papu lost the toss, and admitted that he to hadn’t won one all season. The net result was the captain decided to bat on a greenish wicket in a heavy atmosphere and with Greeny having no lunch at all, one would say fool hardy, however with messers Brewbags and Cannell on other duties, and Beef in his usual recovery mode (came in at 5 am), it proved to be the best option. Green and Lards opened, with Greeny launching into various blows around the wicket. The Captain however saw little of the bowling and what he did get did various things like wobble and swing. Slowly the bowling became more wayward and the partnership blossomed. Greeny reached fifty once again without applause, suspected once again due to the infamous Mr Objectionable count back system, but eventually it was recognised at 52 (an improvement from last week). The hundred came up and went quickly as both Greenie and Lards smacked the Tarts bowling to various areas of the ground. Lards recorded his second fifty on a Saturday (opened twice and two fifties?), while Greenie worked his way to another hundred and must be getting near the 1000 runs on a Saturday mark. During the partnership two strong appeals were voiced by the opposition, perhaps in hope of breaking the stand, but from being at the crease we can report that they were both not out, and for Lama just a reminder there is no instant replay available at KCC (at the present). With the loss of the opening pair (opening stand of 170) things fell away, perhaps a reflection of the pitch and also the better bowling of Papu and Lama. A few good blows by Anurag at the end saw us beyond to the 230 mark where we should have gone onto 250. Mr Objectionable this time look objectionable arriving at the crease with one pad on (at present things look bleak for the senior pro as the Kangaroo Court beckons).

The Tartars batting line up was not known to many of us playing let alone the ever increasing crowd coming through the gates. Amit arrived at the crease hit a four and a six off Fu and then tried it once to often and was caught by the skipper who would have swallowed it otherwise. Beefy tried hard but the slope was not to his liking and was replaced by Tetley. Fu was replaced with the ‘terminal piles’ bowling of Green, however TR and Mr Nainani worked and smacked some initial buffet bowling to all parts such that Tartars worked themselves into a good position. Lards left the field at 17:00 as mother was arriving at airport, and Greenie took over the captaincy duties. After interviewing all present, on Lards return, it seems that the bowling became tighter, the Beefster returned and obviously had woken up as he apparently bowled quick and claimed three good wickets. TR must have batted well and so to Dan Dan the Davern Man. Of special note was Tetley Evans who bowled a controlled spell and who hopefully has many more overs left in him this season. Well done to all.

At KCC: Crusaders 234-6 (D Green 101, G Jardine 73; S Lama 3-58) beat Tartars 202-6 (TR Kalyanaraman 79, V Nainani 56, D Davern 47*; Baker 3-47 by 32 runs

Round 15 - 12th February 2000

Crusaders v. DBS at DBS
Result: Crusaders won by 8 wickets

What was thought to be a bad game on a bad ground turned out exactly as it was billed. There are excuses that can be made for DBS, but unfortunately those have been used up and one can only say that if they don’t pull their act together no one will be playing them or be playing at DBS in the near future. No stumps, no bails, no balls, no hope!!!

Once again the captain lost the toss (still haven’t won one this season) and their captain after stating that he may have to field due to not having any kit available promptly decided to bat. This meant that the ex-boys had to break into the kit room which they took there time about considering they had done it on a regular basis while attending the school not so many years ago.

Butt (unfortunate name, but fortunate batsman) and Dar their two best bats opened, with Butt lucky to survive two LBW appeals which left all in a good view asking themselves what would the ball have missed. Eventually he favoured the leg side swipe once to often against Lethal and the captain obliged with a good running catch. Mean while the spiritual leader Rabbi was keeping it tight at the other end and eventually finished with the commendable figures of 2 for 24 in 10. Lethal, alias Mr Objectionable, took exception to their No.3 batsman (loose term) who was looking for wides which weren’t there and also he suggested that the player had no right to where a Hong Kong shirt that he had obviously not earnt! Lethal later after the game suggested that Uncle Ray Brewster (in the Guinness Book of Records for the number of bruises ever received by a wicket keeper) would have made a greater protest at this illegal apparel. Wickets started to fall the only way they could either bowled or caught as not one LBW or run out was given from some dubious umpiring, thought to be a mixture of ignorance and perhaps blindness (seemingly continually afflictions that have occurred on a regular basis this season). The boys eventually crawled to 162 for 7 off their allotted overs with Mr Objectionable taking a well earned 5 for 46 in his 10 overs. Other notable work was performed by Anuragg behind the sticks who showed no sign of rustiness, kept with great panache and should have had more than two stumpings if the umpires were standing square of the wicket and knew the rules! Soapy Muddy Waters provided some laughter on attempting to catch a ball going away from him which nearly hit him on the head, and may of if Greenie and not shouted ‘watch your head Nicky’.

And so to bat. Soapy who apparently had a semi-early night went early picking out a man in the gully who could catch, and was quickly followed by Burbidge (No. 1 fielder) who got a good one (well that’s what he said) from Dar. At two down for not many things were looking tough and the captain’s instructions to Toad was to stay there. First three balls 4, 4 & 1, next 21 balls of the innings he totaled seven more, however played to instructions perfectly. This can only mean that Monsieur Verte, the Taz monster played another one of his innings. This week ample toilet paper was available to him before his batting although the way he played moving between the wickets wasn’t on his mind. One notable exception was an all run four that Toad made him complete, and it should have been a five. Greenie buckled after completing the fourth and warned his fellow Aussie not to do it again. Now that Greenie has found his weapon of choice balls are disappearing in all directions and at a rapid velocity on all grounds over Hong Kong. This day his timing was immaculate and the ball flew to all corners of the field. The crowd after missing his 50 (acknowledged when he was on 62) preceeded to miss his hundred on 120, through a count back system employed by Mr Objectionable. The winning runs were struck in the 19th over and all were happy to leave DBS early.

The club hosted the victors, but the celebrations were soured by the loss of a tremendous servant of the club, who is a friend to all, but who has decided that he has played his last game for KCC. Roger Nissim has been a member of the club for over 30 years, which for many of us is most of our lives. I think we know the reason for his decision, and my comment is that it is both a sad day for Roger and an even sadder day for KCC. It’s about time that KCC had a few more happier days!!!!

Saracens v. Kai Tak at KCC
Result: Saracens won by 13 runs

Kung Hei Fly Boys

Thoughtfully rearranged by the Skip for the holiday weekend, getting a side out was always going to be a difficult task. However with the assistance of new boy, Phil Campbell and a third Vachha (this one claims he can spin the ball and he weighs less than a 100 kilos) we were in reasonable shape. However they had a strong side.

Batting first the Ravinator who has decided of late that he is a bowler not a batter got out pretty cheaply. Then in went Tyrannosaurus Vach at number 3. Hung around until the bowler finally twigged that if you bowl it under his belly he can’t see the ball. This is not an insignificant area at which to aim. In goes older brother and at drinks we are 59 for 2 with Rahul on about 20. After the drinks we were treated to one of the finest exhibitions of stroke play seen at the KCC. With able support from the Skip, Grumps went on to a magnificent 139 n.o. with Yarman accompanying him to the end. 219 not a bad total but we had little or no bowling cover.

Finesmaster unlucky in the beginning with Scanners being caught but the fielder stepping on the rope. Six!! Then again same fielder drops it and over the ropes. Six! Scanners and Alan Burge go serenly on and put on a 100 for the first wicket before drinks. Last over before drinks Ben executes a brilliant piece of fielding and Alan is run out. Two balls later Nuttall hits one in the air calls "two" and Rahul running in takes a brilliant catch. Back in it.

However with Scanners still in and scoring at 6/7 an over they were still looking dangerous. But then we got rid of Scanners and Chicken Tikoo. ( Does anyone get the impression that they were a lot of KCC guys in their side?). However overs are tight and the Skipper has to slip in one from the Finesmaster sometime. So in the 27th the Finesmaster steps up to bowl to Brett Morley. Six balls later, a wicket maiden. Ravi and Rahul close it out and a great win.

Full marks to Zarin for always getting to the ball before his Uncle even after giving him a 40 yard start. Great backing up and enthusiasm. Good to hear constant calls of "Come on Dad!" But then that’s how Yarman likes us to refer to him. Also to our rugby player, Phil who spent a lot of time on the ground.

No we are not going to mention the C word.

Round 17 - 27th February 2000

Templars v. LSW at KCC
Result: Templars won by 7 wickets

It was a rare occasion that the skip lost the toss, and as expected LSW captain Adnan Butt elected to bat first.

The new ball pair of Ravi and Lama were wayward and consequently punished by the LSW openers. After only four overs the skip turned to the experience of Bharat CoC Gohel...and believe it or not Papu Butani. Both immediately tied up the batsman and soon Papu got the first breakthrough, having Adnan Butt caught behind the wicket off the glove. This bought Riaz Farcy to the wicket and as can be expected he started going for his shots from the word go... played a stunning cover drive to Bharat, only to be dropped next ball by the usually reliable Amit Agarwal behind the stumps. With Bharat getting the other opener Azhar out caught behind, the number four Tabarak Dar and Riaz started pushing the runs slowly. They added over fifty for the third wicket, but a suicidal run by Tabarak soon saw him back in the pavilion. With the skipper bowling in tandem with Bharat the run rate slowed a tad. Riaz meanwhile continued to play some breath taking shots, but going for one too many was bowled neck and crop by Bharat for a well made 80. Mohana Marzook, probably the biggest hitter of the ball in Hong Kong perished to the skip caught at point going for a mighty slog. Trupti made a mess of an Ijaz Mir dolly at long-off, resulting in the game coming to a standstill for the next five minutes... with the bowler to suffer "the CoC" staring Trupti to death. With the skip getting bounce and turn from the KCC astro and the batsmen attempting to slog him, it only resulted in the usual dismissal "stumped Agarwal bowled Sharma". Final tally saw skip calim 5 for 50 odd, CoC 2 for 50 odd off 15 overs and Papu 2 for 35 off 8 overs. LSW all out for 221.

Skip opened the innings with Amit and himself against a quick but wayward attack consisting of Shaqeel and Imran Farcy. Amit did not bother the scorers and Trupti had to come in early, looking rather determined to stay at the wicket. Skip really got stuck into the bowling, so much so he made 40 of the first 50 runs that came off only 7 overs. Once the new ball bowlers were replaced by Mohanna and Riaz the run rate came down but remained at a steady 5 an over. The skip and Trupti got into a tangle with their running - the kind that goes "yes, no, yes... oops, sorry". Trupti being left stranded - but skip taking the blame completely. TR came in and got after the bowling form the word go and he played some superb cover drives, deft sweeps, pulls and back cuts to bring up his fourth fifty of the season. He and the skip put on 145 runs for the third wicket, with the skip bringing-up his fifth Sunday League hundred and the fourth in succession. Six hundreds in last seven outings for the skipper is an indicator of the standard he sets for himself. The winning stroke was appropriately hit by TR in the company of CoC to bring up Templars fourth consecutive win.

All soon retired to the bar and on to the Fincher Room for a Templars reunion curry dinner (arranged by Messrs. Sujanani and Vachha)..young and old were all there. Thanks to Paul Cresswell, CoC, The President (Mrs. President), Rob Gill (Mrs. Gill), Papu Butani (Mrs. Butani) and the only non Templar Tony Lethers Dragon, for joining us.

Must comment on the Templars team spirit, which has been tremendous, the will to do well has progressively increased with every outing. They have all been very supportive and put their heads down and taken the skip's on-the-field abuse. Should Templars beat the Friends XI next week, they should finish runners-up in the League.

Colts v. Vagabonds at Mission Road
Result: Colts lost by 8 wickets

Vags Revenge!

The Colts traipsed out to Mission Road to defend their only unbeaten record this week - against the 8th placed Vags. Skip Lethers took the somewhat unusual step of winning the toss in cold and overcast conditions (however faced with a exam affected squad of 8 with Lal in Happy Valley coaching, he was left with little choice).

The blossoming opening partnership of Correa/Chauduri started well with Dyutish in a rich vein of form and Tony C looking solid after consecutive half centuries against league leaders Little Sai Wan and Pak Assoc. Dyutish took the initiative from his senior partner and raced to 34 off only 20 odd balls before he was caught behind with the score on 45. Dyutish is seeing the ball so early right now that he must feel he is almost capable of hitting everything and anything served up to him - unfortunately this was his downfall today as he played forcefully at one that probably should have been left or treated with more respect.

Maurice came at his now familiar no 3 and pushed the ball around effectively to put on another 30 runs with Tony C before he was out caught behind waving his bat outside off stump for a promising 12. He would however be disappointed with himself for not hanging around for longer as the bowling did not seem to give him any trouble at all. Tony C continued on with Rohan who shows promise from week to week. He was not bothered by either of the bowlers and played to his strengths by pushing singles before being bowled by an inswinger which passed between bat and pad.

In the absence of Lal, Lethers came next and the 2 Tonys pushed the score past 120 for 3 before Tony C fell, caught hitting a rank full toss down the throat of point for 59. Although another healthy contribution today was a day on which he should have gone on to 3 figures. With Tony C's departure Lethers soon followed and it was left to Danish and Dinesh to see who could survive against the now pumped up Vags line up. Unfortunately neither managed to survive, although Danish managed to hit three 4s in an over before being clean bowled by the same bowler in the following over! Dinesh played his traditional tailender slog to be caught skying one to fine leg.

All out for 155 (only 7 wickets) in the 30th over was not an impressive score, but encouragingly with a run rate of over 5 an over we can look forward to a 250+ score if we ever manage to bat the full 50 overs.

The Vags in reply opened well with an initial partnership of 70 before Tony C intervened and had one caught behind. Dinesh bowled far too short early and it is disappointing to see his talent wasted when he has the ability to rip through good players when he pitches the ball up on the wickets. Danish was also wayward and seems to have lost the impeccable line which he had found in the middle of the season.

Rohan came on to bowl a few overs and picked up one wicket, but with both of our openers ineffective and out of the attack, it was always going to be difficult to take wickets with only 9 players on the pitch. In the end the Vags won in the 29th over and thoroughly deserved the win.

With 2 games to go to the league season's end the Colts must try to find some form for the Sunday Cup. Games against Scorpians and Templars will provide opportunities for all players and hopefully we will run into some form.

Next week at HKCC vs Scorpions - a very winnable game!

Round 16 - 20th February 2000

Templars v. Scorpions at HKCC
Result: Templars won by 105 runs

On a fogged out morning when one could barely see the scoreboard from the HKCC pavilion, the skip thankfully won the toss and rightfully elected to bat first.

Trupti and the skip opened the innings and got after the bowling form the word go, resulting in 92 runs being scored of the first 15 overs. Trupti as usual got out to an airy fairy shot for a well compiled 25, of Martin Lever, who was the pick of the bowlers for the Scorps. There was soon the inevitable stoppage for rain and fog that resulted in an early lunch, and the game being reduced to 41 overs a side. Ravi joined the skip and both continued to maintain the run rate of five an over without dominating the bowling. At the 32 over mark the score was an even 180, with the skip getting to his tenth century of the current season, and his fifth consecutive century (100's on the trot against Infidels, Kai Tak, Vagabonds, St. Georges and Scorps). Not too bad an achievement. A flurry of hitting by Ravi, Lama and the Skip resulted in the Templars getting to 251 for 5, Ravi, thankfully regained his touch and Lama showed that he still has it in him to play the odd gem.

The Scorps opened with Martin Lever and Tim Smart. The Skip opened the bowling with Lama and Ben Butt. Both the bowlers were just magnificent. Lama, who has an uncanny ability to really tie up the batsman when bowling at "The Gap", and Ben with his well flighted outswingers, kept the batsman on a very tight leash, so much so Martin Lever had to go for a slog resulting in our standby keeper Anurag "I am a utility player" Bhatnagar performing a smart stumping. Dave Mallinson got together with Tim Smart, but even he could not get the bowling away. The pressure resulted in Smart going for a quick single with Lama picking up and throwing the stumps down in one motion, barely out of his follow-thru, for a brilliant run out. Only 57 runs were scored of the first 18 overs. Thereafter the run rate began mounting geometrically thanks to the incredibly tight line and length maintained by Erle Periera and Bharat. There was never an effort to go after the bowling, and the Scorps were soon out of the match, surrendering rather meekly in the end. The only cheer from the HKCC stands was when Dino (the groundsman) hit a four of Vijay Nainani who picked up the last two wickets. Bharat and Ben got two wickets a piece and Erle three, with Anurag claiming four victims. The Scorps were all out for 145. The performance was solid, without being brilliant.

At HKCC: Templars 251-5 (R Sharma 15, R Sujanani 62, S Lama 30*; M Lever 3-73) beat Scorpions 146 (E Pereira 3-27) by 105 runs

KCC Colts v. Pakistan Association at DBS
Result: Colts lost by 10 wickets

The fast improving KCC Colts had a setback this Sunday in a disappointing outing against 2nd placed Pakistan Association at the Diocesan Boys School ground.

In poor conditions for cricket, skipper Lethbridge elected to bat as the dark clouds loomed over Kowloon. New opening pair Dyutish and Tony Correa started well enough continuing on from the week before with some well timed cuts and drives, before Dyutish was caught behind slashing at one outside off stump in the 5th over. Maurice Ling came to the crease and looked in good touch and began to build a partnership, before he was caught driving off Sada Hussain's first ball for 18 - a disappointing dismissal as he middled it but it went straight down the throat of cover. Correa continued on with Rohan Boghani who looked in good form and they took the score to 97 off 20 overs before Sada again managed to temp a Colt into a false shot - Rohan caught for a patient 11. Lal came to the wicket and never looked comfortable and he became Sada's next victim caught hitting to mid wicket. The rot well and truly set in when Tony Correa was bowled by a grubber on 53.

A procession of dismissals thereafter, Danish bowled trying to slog, Lethers LBW, Dinesh skying one to mid wicket, Kevin caught in short and then Ritesh playing a poor shot saw us all out for 111 in the 30th over and Sada with 6 wickets - a very disappointing effort after scoring over 220 the week before!

In reply Sada was in a big rush to secure maximum batting points taking the long handle to all bowlers and hitting a quickfire 70 off only 11 overs. The Pakistan Association managed to wrap up the game before lunch and the Colts were vanquished to the KCC bar to rue their poor effort with the bat.

Big improvement expected next week against Vagabonds at Mission Road!

KCC Colts v. LSW at Mission Road
Result: Colts lost by 149 runs

The David and Goliath matchup of the week saw bottom of the table Colts against the undisputed league leaders Little Sai Wan. Skip Lethers won the toss and elected to field in what was a good day for cricket - bright sunshine, flat track and no wind.

The Sai Wan openers started true to form taking to openers Danish and visiting opener Dennis Ling with ferocious intent. Both were hit to the boundry countless times off the back foot as the Colts opening bowlers repeatedly pitched the ball too short. Dar in particular was very agressive for Sai Wan and raced to 80 before he was well caught behind by debutant keeper Kevin Ross. Dar's departure however did not bring any respite for the Colts bowlers as Mohanna Mazook proceed to smash 120 off 55 balls including over a dozen sixes. No bowlers were spared and when he was finally well caught by Frankie Khan (yes brother of shoulders K) Little Sai Wan were over 250 with 18 overs to go. A score of 400+ looked on the cards but to their credit the Colts fought it out and managed to restrict Sai Wan to a still awesome 370 for 6 off their allocated 50 overs with Azar and Ijaz Mir both notching up 50s.

None of the bowlers will particularly want to remember the day , but credit should go to Maurice Ling and Yorgi Mahtani who bowled well in the last 15 overs to slow the run rate and pick up some late wickets.

Faced with this mamoth task openers Dytesh and Tony "the taller" Correa strode to the crease to meet the much vaunted Little Sai Wan bowling attack. They started slowy against a pumped up Zubair and Janshed Khan - Zubair searching for his 50th wicket of the season. Against this hostile attack they kept the scoreboard moving, Dytish following on his 140 not out from the day before with some slashing cuts and pulls, the Tony Correa driving off the backfoot against some genuine fast bowling. At drinks the score was 90 for no loss which was the best start all year and at over 5 and over we started to consider the possibilities of a score over 250.

Unfortunately shortly after drinks a recalled Zubair bowled Dytish for 53 and then dismissed Michael Wong for a duck. When Danish was caught for a duck as well and Tony Correa edged Shakil for 51 they day was lost. Lal put on a nice 39 and Lethers, Yorgi and Kevin provided some entertaining moments, and in the 44th over we were bowled out for our first score of 200 for the season - all out for 221 and importantly 2 batting points!

All in all a poor day in the field can be impoved, but a heartening performance with the bat against Hong Kong's best bowling attack. Congratulations to Mohammed Zubair who ended with 6 wickets and achieved his 50 wicket milestone with a trademark yorker to dismiss Lethers.

At Mission Road: JKN LSW 370-5 (A Butt 81, M Marzook 121, A Illahi 47, I Mir 63*) beat KCC Colts 221 (D Chaudhuri 53, A Correa 51; M Zubair 6-43) by 149 runs
